Best Instagram image export settings
For a dependable Instagram carousel, export every slide at the same aspect ratio, use 1080 pixels of width, keep important content away from the edges, and preview the upload before publishing. Use PNG for text-heavy graphics and high-quality JPEG for photographic posts when file size matters.
Portrait: 1080 × 1350 px (4:5)
Square: 1080 × 1080 px (1:1)
Colour: sRGB
Format: PNG for crisp graphics; high-quality JPEG for photos
Sharpening: light or off unless the source is visibly soft
Choose the final aspect ratio first
All cards in a carousel should be designed as a matching set. Portrait 4:5 is a strong default for feed visibility because it occupies more vertical space. Square is useful when the design needs equal width and height or will be reused across different placements. If you are creating Story content, use 9:16 at 1080 × 1920 px, but treat that as a separate output rather than mixing it into a feed carousel.
| Use | Ratio | Export size |
|---|---|---|
| Portrait feed carousel | 4:5 | 1080 × 1350 px |
| Square feed carousel | 1:1 | 1080 × 1080 px |
| Story layout | 9:16 | 1080 × 1920 px |
PNG or JPEG?
Use PNG when edges matter
PNG is a good default for carousels with typography, flat colour, diagrams, screenshots, or thin lines. It is lossless, so the export does not add JPEG artefacts around sharp edges. Instagram may still process the upload, but a clean source gives that processing better material.
Use high-quality JPEG for photography
JPEG can make photographic slides much smaller with little visible difference at a high quality setting. Avoid repeatedly saving the same image as JPEG, because each generation can introduce more compression. Export once from the finished project.
Use sRGB colour
sRGB is the safest colour space for predictable viewing across phones and browsers. Very wide-gamut source photos can look different after a platform converts or compresses them. Check saturated reds, purples, and gradients on the final exported files before uploading.
Do not over-sharpen
Sharpening increases local edge contrast. A small amount can help a soft resized photo, but too much creates bright outlines, emphasises skin texture, and makes noise more obvious. Text and vector-like graphics usually do not need extra sharpening. Compare the normal export with the sharpened version at normal phone size, not only while zoomed in.
Protect text and swipe boundaries
- Keep small text comfortably inside each slide instead of touching the crop edge.
- Do not place a face, logo, or call to action directly on a slide boundary unless the split is intentional.
- For seamless designs, preview the transition between every pair of cards.
- Check that every exported image has identical pixel dimensions.
- Upload slides in numbered order and inspect the preview before sharing.
Why an upload can still look different
Instagram can resize, compress, crop, or otherwise process uploaded media. App versions and publishing tools can also behave differently. A strong source export reduces avoidable quality loss, but it cannot prevent all platform processing. Keep your original project and exports so you can adjust them if publishing behaviour changes.
Final pre-publish checklist
- Open each exported slide and confirm its dimensions.
- Zoom to 100% and check text, lines, gradients, and faces.
- Confirm slide numbers and selection order.
- Use Instagram’s crop control carefully and avoid changing the intended ratio.
- Swipe through the final preview before publishing.
